Made-in-Alaska
look for the bear

Before you buy that ivory-handled ulu or forget-me-not necklace, you might want to make sure your Alaskan memento really is Alaskan. One way to tell is the Made in Alaska label that accompanies many such products. The logo features a large, white bear nuzzling a smaller black bear and the words "made in Alaska."

Beginning in 1986, the Made in Alaska program started as a way to promote truly Alaskan products. To qualify for a permit to use the logo, businesses must prove their products are manufactured in, and using materials from, the state when possible.

Everywhere you go in Alaska, you'll find products of every kind adorned with the Made in Alaska label, including coffee and tea, fur and leather products, photographs and paintings by Alaska artists, toys, clothes, candy, crafts and, of course, all manner of seafood. The two bears on the label will serve not only as a guide, but as a reminder of your trip in years to come.
