Welcome to Homer
The "End of the Road."
The "Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea." The "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World."
There must be something truly special about a town with so many nicknames.
From their first breathtaking glimpse of the Homer Spit from the Sterling Highway coming into town, visitors to Homer are struck by the awesome natural stage on which the little city sits. The looming peaks of the Kenai Mountains, packed with ancient glaciers and brimming with abundant wildlife, stand sentry over Kachemak Bay and, across the water, the town of Homer, where a curious blend of hearty Alaskans - fishermen, outdoor adventurers and talented artisans among them - make their home.
It's the unmatched natural bounty that draws most folks to Kachemak Bay and, to those who come back for a repeat visit or to stay and carve out a life here, it never fails to inspire.
The first "must-see" for any visit to Homer is a trip out to the Homer Spit, a skinny strip of land that juts 4.5 miles out into the bay and is perhaps the city's most famous attraction. The world famous Salty Dawg Saloon is located on the Spit, as is the Homer Harbor, the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon, the home of "eagle lady" Jean Keene and a slew of terrific places to eat, drink and plot a new adventure. From fishing for salmon and halibut - which can win you big bucks during the Homer Halibut Derby - to tide pool kayaking in China Poot Bay to hiking the myriad of wilderness trails in Kachemak Bay State Park, the Homer Spit is the ideal jumping off point for lovers of all things wild and free.
City slickers are welcome in Homer, too, of course, and can find in the community a cultural experience that is unique, even for Alaska, and sometimes, well ... just plain weird.
Music, art, theatre, and literature ... the creative forces of Homer are as powerful as the natural and are a staple of any experience of the community. Start off with a cup of delicious coffee from any one of a number of homegrown espresso joints - many of which are equipped with wireless internet - and from there make your way around Homer's charming and walkable downtown core. Art lovers ought to make tracks to the galleries of downtown and Old Town Homer. History aficionados simply cannot miss the nationally renowned exhibits of the Pratt Museum.
At the end of a long day of art walking, photo-snapping, salmon fishing or sea kayaking, try raising a pint with the locals in one of Homer's many colorful, "salty" pubs. It's the perfect way to cap off your experience at "the end of the road." Or, as our mayor, Jim Hornaday, likes to call Homer, "the most beautiful spot in all Creation."
